Morakniv Mora of Sweden 164 Right-Handed Hook Knife 2.16" 12C27 Stainless Steel Blade, Birch Wood Handle, Vegetable Tanned Leather Sheath - M-13385

This knife has a single-edged stainless steel blade for right-hand use. The back of the knife is not sharp which gives you the ability to use your left hand to push the blade with your fingers from the back. Morakniv has optimized the blade to make it run smoothly over the inside of a spoon or bowl. To protect both you and the knife it comes with a simple but ingeniously designed edge protection made out of Swedish vegetable tanned leather manufactured locally with cowhides from the region.

don't underestimate sharpness

This little puppy came out of the box very sharp I wish I still had the pictures of the first few days I had it I literally had at least three good cuts on my left hand. Please pay attention to what side of the blade you were putting your thumb on if you do it!!!! All in all I would have to say this is a good hook knife for a beginner like me I've been able to carve out 5 spoons already out of cherry and mahogany.

Morakniv makes one of the best of this type

You do have to learn safe carving techniques to use one of these hook knives, Morakniv makes one of the best of this type with a sharp durable edge & through handle tang. I tried mine out on some fairly tough live oak & swamp oak which it continued to cut well for a long time before losing some of it's edge. The Swedish Sandvik steel is impressive though some custom made high carbon steel models may cut a little longer before losing their edge. One of my favorite spoon carving tools.
